Options Autism bring together local community to support Autism Awareness Week

Options Autism are proud to have supported The National Autistic Society’s Autism Awareness Week and World Autism Day to help educate and raise awareness on how we can all make the world a more autism friendly place, given that an estimated 700,000 people in the UK are on the autistic spectrum.

Throughout the week, the five residential care homes within Options Autism North Services took part in a range of activities within the local community to highlight the importance of achieving outcomes for young adults with autism and associated learning difficulties by developing their independence, communication and life skills.

Taking inspiration from the key concept of ‘OUTCOMES’, activities included an ‘Out and about ramble’ through Barton-upon-Humber; Under the water (swimming); ‘Tree top adventure’; ‘Creative crafts’ and ‘Outstanding Good Friday Coffee morning’ at St John’s Church (inviting parents, carers and the public for hot cross buns and drinks in exchange for a small donation); Mexican music night; ‘Easter Egg Hunt’ and ‘Sensational finale’ with a disco, followed by games and a buffet enjoyed by staff, parents/carers, family and friends.

Helen Walker, Team Leader and Anita Keech, House Manager at Rigby (Roxby House), were busy planning the range of activities and are pleased that the week was a great success, not only helping to raise awareness locally but also ensuring the people we support had an enjoyable time.
