News & Events Brand new FE provision – Bankside College – hosts open day for parents and post-16 students with autism
Options Malvern College, Hanley Castle, Worcester – the eagerly awaited, brand new post-16 provision for young people with autism, learning disabilities and complex needs – is opening its doors on Tuesday 26th July, to give parents and prospective students a taste of what life will be like at this custom built facility. The college, run by Options Autism – a specialist provider of caring and learning services for young people and adults with a primary diagnosis of autism – is part of Outcomes First Group, innovators in education and care and the UK’s leading provider of children’s services.
New College Principal, Steve Kelly – an educationalist with over 30 years’ experience as a teacher, senior leader and director in SEN schools, colleges and multiple services – will be on site with his team to meet parents and students to discuss the broad curriculum provided by this new provision. Options Malvern College will be offering academic, vocational and life skills learning alongside an enrichment programme, all tailored to each individual’s specific needs, to ensure progression to the next step in their educational journey.
“We will provide incredible learning experiences for all our students, and give each one the support they need to shape their future,” explained Steve Kelly. “Every young adult who comes to us will be supported by an experienced, specialised team to enable them to fulfil their potential and become confident, happy, independent members of society.
“Our brand new, state of the art facilities, set in the stunning surroundings of the Malvern Hills, have been specifically designed to cater for students with autism, learning difficulties and/or complex needs.
“With a comprehensive selection of educational options available, we will provide a holistic, person-centred approach and appropriate clinical and therapeutic support for success -whichever learning pathway or combination of pathways our students choose. All our classes are delivered by specially trained teachers or vocational instructors and are supported by teaching assistants, ensuring every individual receives the support they need to thrive.
“Our pathways include vocational skills, independent living and academic subjects. Work placements with supported internships will allow students to develop the necessary work-based and social skills needed to transition into paid work. Students can choose from horticulture, sports and exercise, catering, activities for daily living, information technologies, office skills, and arts and crafts.
“Within the college is a purpose built ‘flat’ where students can practice housekeeping tasks and develop skills to support independent or semi-independent living. Where appropriate our students will gain nationally-recognised qualifications and maths and English certification.
