News & Events Students at Options Barton hit a high note
Students from Options Barton, in Barton upon Humber, have been busy learning new skills with the help of weekly visits from a local music teacher.
Ten students, aged between 10-19, have been taking part in the weekly music sessions since the beginning of September 2015.
The aim of the music sessions has been to improve pupil resilience and to broaden pupil horizons, by giving them an insight into cultural experiences and genres that they may not have experienced otherwise.
The sessions have been fun and informative for students, introducing them to a variety of music styles and instruments. Students have been learning about different cultures through music, and have learnt to play the drums. Students are currently working on a project themed around Peter and the Wolf, which has involved using woodwind instruments.
Speaking of the benefit of the music sessions, Options Barton head teacher, Drew Anderson said: “The students absolutely love the music sessions and they have made fantastic progress – much better than we had imagined!
“One of the key reasons we began these sessions was to support children who may have sensory issues surrounding music, helping them to overcome these barriers whilst broadening their horizons.
“We are really impressed with the success of the music sessions and certainly hope to continue this in the next academic year.”
