New Autism Unpacked Episode: Growing Up as an Autism Sibling

What is it really like growing up as the sibling of someone with autism?

In this special two-part episode of Autism Unpacked, we’re joined by Rebecca Smith and her son Max, who share their honest and uplifting story of family life with autism. Together, they offer a powerful insight into the experiences of siblings – a perspective that is often overlooked but incredibly important.

At just ten years old, Max has already written two inspiring books about his life as an “autism brother” to his sisters, Daisy and Jorgi-Rose. His reflections, alongside Becky’s perspective as a parent, create a heartfelt and balanced conversation about the realities of family life.

What does it mean to be an autism sibling?

Growing up with autistic siblings can bring a unique mix of experiences. This episode explores what that looks like day-to-day – from moments of pride and connection to the challenges that can come with balancing everyone’s needs.

Max shares his own thoughts and feelings with honesty and warmth, helping to shine a light on the sibling experience and why it’s so important that these voices are heard and understood.

Understanding the family dynamic

We also explore how families can create an environment where every individual feels valued and supported. Becky shares her experiences of parenting multiple children with different needs, and how open communication and understanding play a key role.

The conversation highlights the importance of recognising each child’s experience within the family, ensuring that siblings feel listened to, included and supported in their own right.

A story of honesty, resilience and learning

This episode is filled with real-life insight, emotion and learning. It offers a meaningful look at both the joys and challenges of growing up alongside autistic siblings, while celebrating the strength and connection within families.

Whether you’re a parent, carer, sibling, or professional working with autistic young people, this episode provides valuable perspective and reassurance that every experience matters.
